Energy Efficiency
As a new energy tariff takes effect, up to 22 million households in the UK may face bills that are £693 higher than expected this year. This is due to a 54% increase in rates across the country from April 1st, affecting even those with deep pockets. Although switching to solar panels or LED lights can have a significant impact, there are also smaller changes that can be made without costing a lot.
For instance, turning off appliances from standby mode and investing in energy-efficient appliances can save up to £55 a year, while cavity wall and loft insulation, as well as double or triple glazing, can save up to £210 in a year.
Replacing an old, inefficient gas boiler and using energy-saving light bulbs are other ways to reduce energy bills. Moreover, cutting down hot water usage can save up to £4 per person per year. While the future of energy prices remains uncertain, experts suggest that customer’s bills could increase by another 20% if supply prices remain the same, which will be reassessed in October.
